Survival in an urban situation means that you ether make enough money to put food on the table every week or you learn to stretch what the good Lord gives you. There is another option but I refuse to put my hand out for anything. So unless you are going to stoop lower than dirt and become a Socialist it helps to understand some basics about old world traditions.
You can never carve all of the meat off of the bone, therefore you must boil the meat off. In the nomadic traditions, the stew has long been a means of practical cooking to stretch out the food until the next hunt. What ever was left on the bone was thrown into the communal pot and with it any vegetables that may have been in season. The pot would feed the tribe for days and what was left would go to the dogs.
Stews are nice because they cook slow and you can go and do other things while they cook. Every culture in the world can offer some kind of stew or soup tradition. No one can invent the wheel more than once, so my assumption is that the need for making the food we have stretch inspired soups in every culture.
