For the past three years, I have been working with the Boy Scouts of America. Every year we struggle to come up with a workable service project for the younger boys, This year I have desided to design one that in on going so it can be used as needed for rank advancement.
My idea is have the boys go door to door in the neighborhood selling my books. It is a win for me but the community benefits with a financial donation to the local food bank of 10% of the royalties generated from the troops efforts. Beyond that the boys earns 10% of the royalties for himself which he can do with as he pleases.
My wife and I live in a financially depressed part of Vancouver, Washington and we know first hand that the families of these boys could use the money. The Second Class rank requires that the boys earn some money on their own and learn to save 50% of that amount, to learn about financial responsibility. The boy can’t do this if their parents can’t afford to pay them for doing chores and mowing lawns is out because the whole aria is made up of apartments that have services do the landscaping. In short I eel that this would be a good way for low income families to help their children to learn to provide for themselves. This is a great way for our 11 year old scouts to help fund their own missions, once they get older. I just want to leave you with one thought, “a viable self sustaining troop is critical for building strong missionaries.”
