Several months ago, the Longshoremen chased a major revenue source out of the Port of Portland. After years of striking the union won their battle but lost the war. Now very warehouse in both Portland and Vancouver is staffed with mostly Temporary Workers. The Union was busted by their own stupidity.
You see both Washington and Oregon are Right to Work states, meaning the Unions have no foothold to use as leverage. If the employer wants to fire someone they need to show no cause or give any reason for the dismissal. So after Hanjin pulled out, the warehouses no longer and the work and the shops that were union finally had just cause to be rid of the full time union workers and seek only non-union part-time Temporary Workers to fill the positions. So why are we still supporting the unions.?
